Fun Bird Facts -Many birds will lay a second clutch of eggs if the first one has been destroyed early in the nesting cycle; this is called "re-nesting."

Birds need Food, Water, and Shelter

Which Bird Feeder Do I Need?

  • Hopper Feeders - Seed is stored in a covered container that shelters it from rain and snow; a slit or small opening at the bottom allows the stored seed to run out and fill the tray as your guests empty it out.
  • Fly-Thru Feeders -  An open design consisting of a flat or inverted tray with a roof. This allows birds the freedom to fly in and out, feed, and feel somewhat sheltered.
  • Suet and Suet Feeders - Prepackaged suet cakes made with insects, peanuts, almonds or peanut butter fit neatly into a feeder with a simple wire cage. These are an economical and very effective way of attracting a large variety of birds to your yard!
  • Tray and Platform feeders -More birds prefer the simple, shallow tray or platform filled with seed. And, these bird feeders will attract almost any species that will feed at feeders. They also accomodate a greater number of birds at a time.

Bird Baths

Birdbaths are a charming addition to your yard or garden and, they will attract an even wider range of birds. Fresh water to drink and bathe in, is vital to our feathered friends, especially when natural sources dry up or freeze. Other than water fowl, birds will be cautious around water because they are easily overtaken by it. These are a few things to remember:

  • Birds are attracted to a shallow dish of water (about knee deep) and a drip or mist or running water are desirable.
  • The birdbath surface needs to be slightly rough so they don't loose their footing. (ie. Our glazed ceramic fountains will not suffice as a birdbath.)

While common backyard birds (like chickadees, house finches, goldfinches, and robins) will frequent your pedestal birdbath, the harder to attract woodland birds prefer their birdbaths on the ground. During colder months, birdbath heaters and de-icers may be necessary to dissolve ice and make way for the birds. Just remember to use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet.

Shelter

Birds need to feel safe, nest, and raise their young in shelter. In addition to bird houses; trees, shrubs, plants and flowers can provide shelter and a natural food source for birds. We have a few articles to get you started. Then you can research  planting to attract birds and we encourage everyone to do it.  Go to www.nrcs.usda.gov (Natural Resources Conservation Service) and download their Backyard Conservation Guide. Anyone, no matter where you live, can implement conservation practices and attract wildlife to your surroundings. To search for wildbirds native to your area, put 'your state' (not abbreviated) Department of Conservation in your general search engine. Then, choose the official state conservation site and revel in the wildlife/bird section.
